The shadow bolt streaked off into the air, transfixing one of the armored figures chasing her and causing him to jerk upright and fall heavily. She glanced over at his comrades, who didn't bother stopping to check on their fallen compatriot, and dropped prone to the ground as bolts of shimmering light streaked over her head.
The two men drew long hand-and-a-half swords and charged into melee, hoping that their hastily thrown spells had functioned as a useful distraction.

A young woman, a girl really, sat at the large study table, her shoulders slumped, dark circles outlining her eyes and rendering her exhaustion plain for all to see. Her raven-colored hair was let down in a cascade of shimmering blackness, but seemed a trifle duller than usual. It was plain to see that she had been working at this task for many hours without rest. Her large, expressive violet eyes were drawn and heavy-lidded and she wore no makeup.
